Cai Xiang (1012–1067) was born during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) in Xianyou county, Fujian province. In 1031, he obtained jinshi, the highest degree offered by the ancient Chinese imperial examination.

Cai was a knowledgeable scholar who could not only compose poems, but also write fine calligraphy. He was the first of the four calligraphy masters of the Song Dynasty.

He also led the construction of China's first cross-sea bridge, Luoyang Bridge, which played an important role in Quanzhou's social and economic development and prosperity.
